SDRplay RSP series — receive-only SDR needing a closed-source vendor API

Vendor: SDRplay

Status: untested — catalogued from documented sources, not yet proven here.

Not maintainer-verified: nobody on this project has run this hardware yet. The two facts are recorded separately on purpose (D-027) — a correct recipe and a tested device are different claims.

What it is

A family of receive-only SDRs with good HF performance. The vendor's own API is closed source and distributed as a binary installer behind a web form.

What you can do with it

Wideband receive, with the open libmirisdr path for older Mirics-based hardware and the vendor API for full support of current models.

Setup

The open path is libmirisdr4 plus soapysdr-module-mirisdr, which installs from apt and covers Mirics-based devices. The vendor API is a manual step and this project will not automate it — see known_problems.

Known problems

The SDRplay API is a .run installer behind an interactive download page. It cannot be fetched non-interactively, cannot be checksummed in advance, and therefore cannot satisfy this project's requirement that every non-apt source is verified before installation. If you need it, download and run it yourself; we will document the step and not perform it.

How it identifies itself

USB id What Confirmed Node
1df7:2500 Mirics MSi2500-based device — the silicon behind early RSPs yes libusb
1df7:3000 Mirics MSi3101 SDR yes libusb

What is not yet known

The identifiers above are Mirics silicon as recorded by Debian's libmirisdr4, which the open libmirisdr driver targets. Current RSP models under SDRplay's own API may enumerate differently and that has NOT been verified. The maintainer does not own an RSP, so confirming it needs lsusb output from an owner, per model — RSP1A, RSPdx and RSPduo should each be recorded rather than assumed to share a pair.

Who can close it: nobody on this project owns one — an operator who does can close it with one lsusb (how).

Access and permissions

Group membership required: plugdev — added at install, applies at next login.
