wri-power-plants¶
WRI's Global Power Plant Database, for the infrastructure layers outside the US
- Version recorded: 1.3.0
- Categories:
emcomm,navigation-maps - Upstream: https://datasets.wri.org/dataset/globalpowerplantdatabase
What it does¶
Installs one file, WRI's Global Power Plant Database v1.3.0 as a zipped CSV (about 4.2 MB), under /usr/local/share/hammunition/data/wri-power-plants/. Nothing reads it on its own: hammunition maps infra import --from-wri turns the plants in your map regions, outside the US, into a layer for QMapShack, Navit, phones and the browser map, each with its capacity, fuel, owner and commissioning year, credited "WRI Global Power Plant Database v1.3.0 (2021), CC BY 4.0".
Why you would want it¶
It is the only worldwide plant list found under an open licence that can be pinned: Canada's, Europe's and the UK's regulators publish theirs in many shapes and licences, and none as one file. For a station whose regions reach past the US border, it is the plant layer.
Before it will work¶
Map regions installed (hammunition install osm-regions): the import keeps what lies in their boxes. QMapShack, Navit or the browser map to see the layer.
How it installs¶
- data (CC-BY-4.0, https://datasets.wri.org/dataset/globalpowerplantdatabase): https://wri-dataportal-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/manual/global_power_plant_database_v_1_3.zip (4,178,889 bytes)
Known problems¶
Frozen in 2021: plants built since are missing and some retired ones remain. US plants are left out of the layer, by design (eia-860m covers the US). CC BY 4.0 asks for the credit the layer carries; keep it if you share the layer.
Keeping it current¶
- probe: none
- strategy: reinstall
- Frozen since 2021: WRI no longer updates it. The weekly pin review runs
scripts/gen_wri_pin.py --check, a HEAD that goes red if the file's ETag or size ever change; regenerating checks the new bytes' MD5 against the ETag before it writes anything.
Where to get help with the software itself¶
World Resources Institute's dataset page (https://datasets.wri.org/dataset/globalpowerplantdatabase); the database is no longer maintained, so corrections go to the national sources it was built from. Hammunition only converts the file.
