wordsworth

Generate Morse practice text the Wordsworth way — words, not characters

What it does

Two small Perl tools implementing K1IG's "Wordsworth" method of Morse training: gen_cw_words emits random words from built-in lists (common CW words, letters, names, numbers) for head-copy practice, and text_to_cw converts any text file into practice material. Pipe either into a CW audio tool such as ebook2cw.

Why you would want it

The Wordsworth method (QST, 2019) trains hearing whole words instead of counting dits -- the widely recommended path past the 10 WPM plateau. These are the author-adjacent reference tools, co-published by AHRL's own maintainer.

Before it will work

A CW audio generator to feed -- ebook2cw or the ebook2cwgui this catalog carries. Perl is already on every Debian-family system.

How it installs

  • prebuilt tarball from https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/kb1oiq-k1ig-wordsworth/wordsworth/wordsworth_0.3.tar.gz
  • The SourceForge artifact hashes identically to the copy AHRL bundles -- verified 2026-08-30, both downloads. Perl itself is essential on every target; no dependency line needed.

Binaries this produces:

  • gen_cw_words.pl → gen_cw_words
  • text_to_cw.pl → text_to_cw

Known problems

None known. The upstream tarball also carries QSO_Words_5000.txt, sample QSO text worth feeding to text_to_cw -- grab it from the archive if you want it; nothing installs it system-wide.

Keeping it current

  • probe: none
  • strategy: reinstall
  • Effectively finished software; 0.3 has stood since 2021.

Where to get help with the software itself

The SourceForge project (KB1OIQ and K1IG).
