tmd710-tncsetup

Configures the built-in TNC on Kenwood TM-D710 and TH-D72 radios

What it does

Sends the setup commands a Kenwood TM-D710, TM-D710G or TH-D72 needs before its internal TNC will work with an APRS program: callsign, beacon settings, path, and the KISS-mode switch that hands the TNC over to the computer.

Why you would want it

These radios have a real TNC inside them, which is a considerable convenience -- no sound card, no interface, no level adjustment. Getting it into the right mode from the front panel is a menu safari, and this does it in one command, repeatably, which matters when you are setting up in the field.

Before it will work

One of the supported Kenwood radios and its data cable, with access to the serial device.

How it installs

  • apt: tmd710-tncsetup

Known problems

It is specific to these models and will not usefully talk to anything else. The radio's own APRS functions and computer control of the TNC are mutually exclusive modes; switching to KISS turns off the radio's internal APRS display, which surprises people who wanted both.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
