thunderbird

Mozilla's full-featured mail client — the household name

What it does

Mozilla Thunderbird: mail, calendars, address book and RSS in one long-lived, actively developed open-source client.

Why you would want it

The most widely known open-source mail client, which matters for EMCOMM: in a stress situation, familiar software is a feature. Rich filtering keeps Winlink traffic organised. In the packet/Winlink workflow, messages fetched by PAT land in a local mailbox; a mail client is how a human reads and writes them.

Before it will work

Nothing radio-side. To wire it to Winlink, point it at PAT's mailbox or use PAT's own web UI alongside it -- the packet profile's documentation covers the workflow.

How it installs

  • apt: thunderbird

Known problems

Ubuntu has been migrating Thunderbird to snap; on our verified targets (Parrot, Debian, Kali) the apt package is the real application. Measure Ubuntu when its VM exists.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
