svxreflector

Conference server that links many SvxLink nodes into one talk group

What it does

A server that SvxLink nodes connect to, relaying audio between all of them so that a transmission on any node is heard on the rest. It supports talk groups, so one server can carry several independent conversations, and it authenticates the nodes that connect.

Why you would want it

Point-to-point links between repeaters do not scale past a handful. A reflector is the star-topology answer: every node connects to one place and the mesh problem disappears. If you are building a regional linked system rather than joining one, this is the piece in the middle.

Before it will work

A machine reachable by the nodes, which in practice means a public address or a VPN, and the ports open. Node authentication keys, which you issue.

How it installs

  • apt: svxreflector

Known problems

It is infrastructure other people depend on: an unreliable reflector takes a whole linked system down rather than one node. Audio quality is limited by the worst link in the group, not the average. As with svxlink-server the version spread across targets is wide and configuration syntax has changed between releases, so examples need checking against your version.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
