Sets the audio levels an SvxLink node needs to work properly

What it does¶
Tools for measuring and setting the transmit and receive audio levels between a computer and a radio in an SvxLink installation, including the CTCSS tone level and the deviation of the transmitted signal.
Why you would want it¶
Audio level is the single most common reason a repeater controller works on the bench and badly on the air. Over-deviation sounds distorted and splatters; under-deviation is quiet and fails to open squelch on distant receivers. Both are invisible without measurement, and this is the measurement.
Before it will work¶
A configured SvxLink installation and a radio connected. A second receiver to listen on helps considerably and is not required.
How it installs¶
- apt:
svxlink-calibration-tools
Known problems¶
Getting levels right is iterative and takes longer than people expect, which is why it is so often skipped. The tools measure what the sound card sees; the radio's own microphone gain and compressor sit between that and the transmitted signal, so a correct reading here does not guarantee correct deviation without checking on the air.
Keeping it current¶
- probe: apt policy
- strategy: apt_upgrade
