soapysdr-module-uhd

SoapySDR driver module for Ettus USRP hardware

What it does

A SoapySDR plugin that wraps libuhd, so a USRP appears as an ordinary SoapySDR device to any program speaking that interface.

Why you would want it

USRPs are driven through UHD, which is its own API, while a great deal of SDR software speaks SoapySDR and nothing else. This is what lets a USRP be used with software written for cheaper hardware -- CubicSDR, SDR++, gqrx and the rest. It is the opposite direction from uhd-soapysdr, which this catalog also carries; both are built from the same upstream source and the names are easy to swap.

Before it will work

UHD itself and the firmware images a USRP needs -- uhd-host carries the downloader, and a device without matching firmware fails to initialise.

How it installs

  • apt: soapysdr-module-uhd

Known problems

A layer over a layer: a fault can be in the application, in SoapySDR, in this module, in UHD or in the firmware, and the error usually names only the outermost. Test with UHD's own utilities first to establish the device works at all. Advanced USRP features are not all expressible through SoapySDR, so the native API remains right for those.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade

Where to get help with the software itself

The Pothosware project.
