soapysdr-module-remote

The client half of SoapyRemote — uses an SDR served by another machine

What it does

Discovers SDRs published on the network by soapyremote-server and presents them locally as SoapySDR devices. The application sees an ordinary radio; the samples arrive over the network.

Why you would want it

This is the half that goes on the machine with the screen. Install soapyremote-server where the dongle is and this where you are sitting, and every SoapySDR program reaches the remote radio unchanged. Getting the antenna away from a noisy house is the usual reason.

Before it will work

A running soapyremote-server somewhere reachable. Discovery uses broadcast, so a device on another subnet must be named explicitly in the device string rather than found.

How it installs

  • apt: soapysdr-module-remote

Known problems

Network bandwidth bounds the sample rate, and exceeding it drops samples rather than reporting an error -- the symptom is gaps and clicks that look like a hardware fault. There is no authentication anywhere in this protocol, in either half.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade

Where to get help with the software itself
