python3-meshtastic

Meshtastic command-line client and Python API

What it does

The official Meshtastic client library and meshtastic command: configures a node over USB serial or BLE, sends and receives messages, and reads channel and region settings.

Why you would want it

It is how a Meshtastic node is configured from a computer rather than a phone, which matters for reproducible setup and for anything scripted. The Python API is also the route to logging a mesh's traffic.

Before it will work

A Meshtastic node on USB and dialout membership. Region must be set before the radio will transmit at all, which is the first thing every new node needs.

How it installs

  • apt: python3-meshtastic

Known problems

Client and firmware versions track each other closely and a large gap causes confusing configuration errors. Debian 13 and Parrot ship 2.6.0 while Kali ships 2.7.11, so a node flashed with current firmware may want a newer client than a stable base provides.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
