putty

The GUI serial terminal hams reach for, with saved sessions

What it does

PuTTY: a graphical terminal for serial lines (and SSH/telnet). On Linux its serial mode is the draw -- pick a device and speed, save the session, reconnect in a click.

Why you would want it

The de facto GUI serial console for radio work: rig debug ports, TNC configuration, GPS at a raw baud rate. Saved sessions per device beat retyping stty incantations.

Before it will work

Access to the serial device -- membership of the dialout group, which the workstation profile arranges. A programming cable or rig data port.

How it installs

  • apt: putty

Known problems

ssh makes PuTTY's network side redundant on Linux; it is carried for the serial side. Needs dialout for the serial device -- the workstation profile adds you.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
