multimon-ng

Decoder for POCSAG, FLEX, AFSK, DTMF and other audio-band digital modes

What it does

Takes demodulated audio and decodes a range of classic digital modes: POCSAG and FLEX paging, AFSK at several rates, DTMF, ZVEI and others.

Why you would want it

It is how audio from a receiver becomes text, and it is the standard back end for APRS and paging work. Piped from rtl_fm it turns a cheap dongle into a working decoder with no GUI at all.

Before it will work

An audio source — typically piped from rtl_fm or a sound card fed by a receiver. It expects raw samples at a specific rate, which is the usual first mistake.

How it installs

  • apt: multimon-ng

Known problems

It decodes whatever it is given and reports nothing when the input is wrong, so silence usually means a sample-rate or format mismatch rather than an absent signal.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
