morse-classic

Text-to-Morse sounder and trainer, Eric Raymond's morse-classic

What it does

Sounds text as Morse and drills you on it, with a mode that sends random groups and checks what you type back. It is the long-lived Unix morse program, maintained by Eric Raymond as morse-classic.

Why you would want it

It is small, has no dependencies worth the name, and does the one thing without ceremony. On a headless or minimal machine where aldo's or qrq's interfaces are more than you want, this still works.

Before it will work

A sound device for audio output; it can also print the dots and dashes, which is occasionally what you want when checking an encoding by eye.

How it installs

  • apt: morse

This displaces the distribution's own pipewire-alsa (D-022: coexist, disclose, never remove silently).

Known problems

Its teaching model is the plain speed-up approach rather than Koch, so as a learning tool it is weaker than aldo. As a converter and a sounder it is fine, and that is the use to keep it for.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
