icom

Minimal CI-V control for Icom radios from the command line

What it does

Sends CI-V commands to an Icom transceiver over a serial interface -- setting frequency and mode, reading back what the radio reports -- as a small standalone program with no library dependency.

Why you would want it

Rarely, and deliberately so. Hamlib's rigctl covers this and far more. What this offers is directness: it speaks the CI-V protocol with nothing in between, which makes it useful for understanding the protocol or for debugging a case where hamlib's backend is itself suspect.

Before it will work

An Icom radio with a CI-V interface, the correct CI-V address, and access to the serial device.

How it installs

  • apt: icom

Known problems

The version string is its release date and it is from 2012; the CI-V command set has grown since. It has no upstream Homepage in Debian and no project page to point at, so what the distribution ships is what exists. For ordinary rig control, use libhamlib-utils instead -- this is carried for the narrow case where the simpler tool is the more useful one.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade

Where to get help with the software itself

Debian declares no upstream Homepage for this package, so the tracker is the honest pointer rather than an invented project page.
