gr-hpsdr

GNU Radio blocks for OpenHPSDR transceiver hardware

What it does

Source and sink blocks that speak OpenHPSDR protocol 1 over Ethernet, so Hermes, Hermes-Lite, Metis and the other HPSDR boards can be used inside a GNU Radio flow graph for both receive and transmit.

Why you would want it

HPSDR hardware is the open-hardware end of amateur SDR -- capable transceivers with published designs -- and this is how you build your own processing around one instead of using the vendor software. The Hermes-Lite 2 in particular is a common homebrew transceiver and this is its GNU Radio path.

Before it will work

HPSDR hardware on the same Ethernet segment. It is discovered by broadcast, so a router between you and it usually means it is not found.

How it installs

  • apt: gr-hpsdr

Known problems

Protocol 1 only. Newer boards using protocol 2 are not supported by this module and the failure is a device that does not respond rather than a version message. As an out-of-tree module it is compiled against a specific GNU Radio version, which is the version-lock problem the gnuradio manifest describes.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
