goldendict-ng

A desktop dictionary that looks words up in dictd and in Kiwix books

What it does

A desktop look-up window: type a word, or select one in any application and press a shortcut, and it answers from every dictionary it knows -- the local dictd from dictionaries, StarDict and other dictionary files, and ZIM books such as a Wiktionary.

Why you would want it

The desktop half of dictionaries: the same answers as dict WORD without a terminal, and one window for dictionaries and books together.

Before it will work

A desktop session. Once dictionaries is installed, add the local dictd (127.0.0.1) as a DICT server among its dictionary sources, and add ZIM books by their folder. Where those settings sit in this version's menus has not been checked on a desktop here yet.

How it installs

  • apt: goldendict-ng

Known problems

It does not find dictd by itself: the DICT server has to be added once, by hand, as above. Qt6 WebEngine is a large dependency on a desktop without it.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
