gnuaisgui

Puts the vessels gnuais has heard on an OpenStreetMap display

What it does

Reads the vessel database gnuais maintains and draws it on an OpenStreetMap background: position, heading, track history, name and vessel type for each contact.

Why you would want it

AIS data as text is a list of MMSI numbers and coordinates. On a map it is a harbour. This is the difference between having the decode working and getting anything out of it.

Before it will work

gnuais running and populating its database, which this manifest declares as a dependency. Map tiles are fetched over the network, so the display needs an internet connection even though the reception does not.

How it installs

  • apt: gnuaisgui

Known problems

Map tiles come from a public tile server; heavy use is discourteous and may be rate-limited, which shows up as a blank map rather than an error. Displaying vessel positions is republishing them locally, which is harmless; feeding them onward is a separate decision.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
