git

Distributed version control — the tool this project is distributed with

What it does

Tracks changes to files over time, with full history available offline and the ability to synchronise with remote copies.

Why you would want it

Every workflow in this catalog assumes it. Hammunition itself is distributed by git rather than by tarball — that difference is one of the stated reasons the project exists — and several manifests install software directly from a pinned git revision.

Before it will work

Nothing. It is in the base repositories of every supported target.

How it installs

  • apt: git

Known problems

Configure user.name and user.email before your first commit or git will refuse to make one — the only first-run surprise in an otherwise boring, reliable package.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
