baycomusb

Driver for the HB9JNX USB packet modem

What it does

Drives the Baycom USB packet modem and presents it to the AX.25 stack. The USB sibling of the EPP modem, and the one with a fighting chance of connecting to a current machine.

Why you would want it

Only if you have the hardware. Carried for the same reason as baycomepp: the device exists and an operator holding one should find an entry rather than a gap.

Before it will work

A Baycom USB modem, and permission to open its USB device -- which means a udev rule rather than root.

How it installs

  • apt: baycomusb

Known problems

Long unmaintained: the version is 0.10 and Debian's revisions are all that have changed in many years. The Blend marks it hardware-specific and Suggests rather than Recommends. As with the EPP modem, a sound-card TNC is the answer for anything new.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
