baycomepp¶
Driver for the HB9JNX parallel-port packet modem
- Version recorded: 0.10
- Categories:
device-support,soundcard-modems - Upstream: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/baycomepp
What it does¶
Drives the Baycom EPP modem, a packet radio modem that attaches to an enhanced parallel port, presenting it to the kernel AX.25 stack.
Why you would want it¶
Only if you have one. It is carried because the hardware exists and someone holding one should find support here rather than a gap -- the Blend lists it as a Suggests for the same reason, marking it hardware-specific.
Before it will work¶
A Baycom EPP modem and a machine with a real parallel port in EPP mode. Both are increasingly hard to find; USB parallel adapters do not provide EPP and will not work.
How it installs¶
- apt:
baycomepp
Known problems¶
Parallel ports have effectively disappeared from modern hardware, which is the practical barrier rather than anything about the software. Direct hardware access from a driver like this also sits poorly with modern kernel lockdown and secure boot arrangements. For new work, a sound-card modem such as Direwolf does the same job on hardware that exists.
Keeping it current¶
- probe: apt policy
- strategy: apt_upgrade
Where to get help with the software itself¶
Thomas Sailer, HB9JNX, originally. Debian declares no Homepage and there is no live project page to cite, so the tracker is the honest pointer.
