ax25-xtools

X11 versions of the AX.25 monitoring tools

What it does

Windowed equivalents of the ax25-tools monitors, principally xlisten -- the same raw-frame view as listen in a scrolling window rather than a terminal.

Why you would want it

On a desktop, having the frame monitor in its own window beside the terminal program is more useful than it sounds: packet debugging is a comparison between what you sent and what went out, and that is a two-window job.

Before it will work

An X11 session and a configured AX.25 port.

How it installs

  • apt: ax25-xtools

Known problems

Needs the kernel AX.25 stack, which Linux 7.1 removed (merge 64edfa65, 2026-04-24); on a 7.1 or newer kernel -- Kali rolling and Pop!_OS 24.04 on 7.1.5, measured 2026-09-04 -- the plan refuses or defers this unit by name. See ax25-tools and docs/reference/kernel-ax25.md. It is a thin X11 wrapper with no theming and no scrollback beyond what the widget holds. For anything to be captured rather than watched, the command-line listen piped to a file is the better tool.

Keeping it current

  • probe: apt policy
  • strategy: apt_upgrade
