arduino-cli¶
Command-line toolchain for compiling and uploading Arduino-framework firmware
- Version recorded: 1.5.1
- Categories:
programmer,workstation - Upstream: https://github.com/arduino/arduino-cli
What it does¶
Compiles and uploads Arduino-framework sketches from the command line, manages board support packages and libraries, and lists attached boards with the ports and cores they need.
Why you would want it¶
Several devices in this catalog run Arduino-framework firmware, and building it from a terminal is reproducible in a way the graphical IDE is not. It is also the fastest way to identify which core a connected board wants.
Before it will work¶
Membership of the dialout group and a board support package for whatever you are targeting, which it downloads on first use. On Debian 13 and Parrot the package is not available at all.
How it installs¶
- apt:
arduino-cli— on kali - Kali only. Absent from Debian 13 and Parrot. Upstream ships prebuilt binaries, which would need the binary backend plus a pinned checksum; that is deliberately not claimed here until it is tested.
Known problems¶
Not packaged for Debian 13 or Parrot — Kali only. Board support packages are fetched from the network on first use, which is worth doing before taking a machine into the field. ModemManager grabbing a newly attached board for twenty seconds makes upload fail in a way that looks like a wiring problem.
Keeping it current¶
- probe: apt policy
- strategy: apt_upgrade
